After few camera pendants (like this one and that one) I felt that people generally tend to like my creations. So it is only natural that I want to keep doing it to bring more joy. This time I decided to challenge myself with earrings instead of pendant. Making an earring set is astonishingly difficult as two pieces must be identical. Well, to some extent at least.

I always admired stones since I was a little boy. On the rare occasions of walking along a river bank I was all the time looking for odd stones and bringing them home. But I never knew what to do with them. Many years passed and finally I have an idea for my childish passion – making jewellery.

Luckily I happened to have a pair of lovely garnet cabochons and two square rose quartz stones. I spent quite some time staring at them trying to figure out a way to make them even more beautiful. Camera earrings project seems to be a good fit.

The bodywork seemed simple and straightforward. First frame made with silver strip will hold the quartz. It will have two prongs at the back and a bit smaller frame at the front to sit tight. Cabochon will be casted into the round frame made out of few jump rings.

Right after assembling started I discovered that the cabochon frame is a little smaller than I thought and does not touch the outer front frame. Luckily I have enough filigree wire to play around with so I decided to give it a shot. Since there is no big mechanical tension expected in this arrangement, all elements should hold together on filigree wire just fine.

While front frame is taking a pickle bath it’s time to prepare the back side. Essentially this is nothing but a ring made with silver strip and squared to fit the quartz stone. As I am not gonna use any glue in these earrings the cast should fit tightly to the stone. The overall idea is that the cabochon will be supported by a quartz which will be squeezed in its frame and fixed with two prongs.

Even though my earrings do not look exactly like cameras, I must say I am satisfied with the result. Have a look yourself – enjoy the pictures below made by my lovely wife!
